DISCOVER THE TERRITORY

NATURE

The territory that hosts Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole contains a real treasure from a natural and landscape point of view: water, earth, rock and vegetation combine to build a unique, majestic and exciting spectacle, so beautiful it seems to have been designed. In the mountains, you can discover the secrets of the forest through organized excursions, mountain bike trails and trekking, for real sportsmen or simple enthusiasts. On the hills, covered with vineyards, you can let yourself be carried away by the colours that paint different sceneries with the passing of the seasons; or let yourself be led by the aromas and scents that mark the “Strada dei Vini e dei Spori” (Wine and Flavours route), that runs through the places where typical local products are produced. And, finally, the sea, which the eye touches and embraces from every height, making it feel very close. Starting from the Foreste Casentinesi Park, the territory extends through all these landscapes which can be enjoyed on foot, by bike and on horseback, taking advantage of the proposals offered by the local holiday fams, and even, with a bit of luck, coming across hedgehogs, foxes and hares.

Thermal Baths Park

Thermal Baths Park

The Thermal Baths Park is a green space with lush, centuries-old plants, built in the early 1900s to complement the treatments and improve the well-being of patients, offering healthy walks and moments of relaxation in pleasant and peaceful corners.

The garden offers different and interesting views: shady avenues shelter formal corners designed for meeting and conversation; other paths lead to the discovery of portions of vegetation with a more intact and almost wild appearance. Large specimens of trees are to be found almost everywhere, both native and exotic species, such as the cedar of Lebanon, the evergreen sequoia, the Caucasian fir and the Spanish fir.

Castrocaro Terme River Park

Castrocaro Terme River Park

Ideal for those looking for a bit of tranquillity without straying too far from the urban area is the Parco Fluviale (River Park), a green and well-equipped area that runs along the Montone River. Characterised by plants and shrubs typical of river floodplains – such as willow, poplar, acacia, birch and marsh cane – it is an immense green lung a short distance from the town, the undisputed kingdom of squirrels and dormice.

Situated near the Parco delle Terme, it is crossed by a winding and romantic cycle path that extends as far as the walls of Terra del Sole; crossing fields and vineyards for about 7 km, it finally joins the Urban Park of Forlì.

Sorgara Park

Sorgara Park

The Sorgara Park is a suggestive place where the ferruginous waters of Rio Petra flow, which have always been appreciated for their important therapeutic properties. It was in 1924 that a new hydropinic establishment was inaugurated in Sorgara, using three different types of mineral water, called “Salutare”, “Gigliola” and “Ferruginous”. The springs were discovered by Michele Savelli, a citizen of Modigliana who lived in Castrocaro and who, since 1919, had enthusiastically devoted himself to the research of this ancient and abandoned aquifer.

Bolga

Bolga

The Bolga Lakes are an uncontaminated place on the hills of Castrocaro Terme, where the renowned salsojodic waters flow and are collected and conveyed to the thermal establishments through underground pipes. There are also mineral water springs in the area that bubble to the surface as a result of methane and hydrogen sulphide gas. They are easily reached by following Via Rio Cozzi.

Montepagliaio Gullies

Montepagliaio Gullies

All trekking enthusiasts who find themselves travelling along the fascinating ‘Via del Santo’ itinerary are offered, before reaching the Montepaolo hermitage, the extraordinary vision of the blue gullies of Montepagliaio. Created by strong erosion, the gullies are reminiscent of a lunar landscape and, despite their desolate sterility, represent a world of great beauty and high naturalistic value. The significant features of the forms of erosion are determined by the fall of rainwater, which creates a particular form of soil drainage, branching out to such an extent as to form true miniature catchment basins. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in clayey areas, where during rainfall the clays themselves become softer that miniature streams form with a remarkably winding course. Once this phenomenon ceases, the clays are cemented again, giving rise to the typical gully landscape characterised by pinnacles that are sometimes very sharp and divided by deep fissures. The above-mentioned clays contain a remarkable fauna of well-preserved Pliocene fossils (turitella, cerithium, dentalium and rare conus), providing all enthusiasts with a fascinating opportunity to observe the remains of organisms that lived in the geological past.
